In this paper, the compactness and the phase composition of the protective rust layer on the surface of weathering steel were observed and tested using optical microscope, EPMA and XRD. The distribution of the internal stress in the rust layer was analyzed by finite element simulation, and the ion selective performance of the rust layer was measured by synthesizing the corrosion products in the laboratory . Results show that the protective rust layer on weathering steel, accelerated by alloying element enrichment and rust/steel interface flattening, was equipped with cation selective performance, such rust layer could depress the penetration of corrosive anion and then decrease the corrosion rate.
