Influence of Mesophases Additives on Carbon/Carbon Composites

摘要

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the influence of mesophases addition on the resulting mechanical behavior and thermal conductivity of a carbon/carbon composite. The reinforcement was an activated carbon fiber felt, and a phenolic-resol-type resin was used as the matrix precursor. A mesophases with zero to 30 percents of weight fraction has been added to the matrix, in order to examine its influence.rn The method of liquid-phase impregnation was utilized to form the matrix carbon into the reinforcement. The cured composites were first stabilized at 230 ℃ and then heat-treated at 400,600, 800, 900 and 1000℃, respectively, for carbonization. The measured flexural strengths for the composites treated at 1000℃ were 51.20,49.59,43.55, and 38.76 MPa for the specimens with zero, 10 wt% , 20 wt , and 30 wt% of mesophases additions, respectively; the average measured flexural modulus were1.73,1.24,0.73, and 0.57 GPa, respectively. Adding the mesophases was found to reduce both the strength and the modulus. However, with adding 30% of the mesophases, the resulting thermal conductivity was found to increase from 1.55 to 1.78 W/mk.
