Genetically-modified organisms(GMOs)remain problematical on several scales, from global to local.This article reviews both the promise and perceived perils of GMOs in the evolution of agriculture.It discusses the two global protocols-the Cartagena Protocol and the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol-instituted for the purpose ofimproving safety in use of GMOs.Then the article compares the way two large but quite different agricultural powers,the United States and China,have developed and regulated GMOs.
