The lightweight design is one of the important research directions of the modern big-scaleengineering design, whose guiding principle is, on the basis of promoting performance steady，designingvarious units parts in a power frugal way and optimizing the exterior and interior structures of the machinerycontinually. This paper first introduced the heave engineered industries' present situation of the lightweightdesign and the necessity and urgency of its research and development. Then it carried out the researchanalysis, combining the application status of lightweight technology of the engineering design at home andabroad, and put forward the basic principles of development of the lightweight design in related engineering machinery.
