It is well established that the changes in binaural signals that occur during active localization normally aid listeners in resolving environmental sound sources in terms of their frontward or rearward incidence. However, the relative importance of head-motioncoupled changes in simple time-based and level-based binaural cues has not been so well examined during active localization. In order to investigate the potential dominance of head-motion-coupled lateralization cues over other cues, a series of experiments were initiated in which active localization was attempted by listeners fitted with binaural hearing instruments that allowed for the signals reaching their ears to be reversed. The binaural hearing instrument was employed to implement a classic pseudophonic condition in which the sound arriving at the entrance to the left ear canal was delivered via an acoustically isolated earphone inserted into the right ear, and vice versa. Under these conditions, it is not surprising to find that the listener's world is reversed left to right. Another consequence that might seem rather surprising, but is nonetheless easily explained, is that the listener's world also is reversed front for back, and up for down. These results demonstrate the dominance of head-motion-coupled lateralization cues over other cues during active localization, such as the directional cues associated with the filtering effects of the pinna, which are widely regarded as providing important cues for resolving frontward from rearward source incidence angles.
