Smoking: An impact on the cyclic variation of blood echogenicity of the carotid artery.

In this research, cyclic variation of echogenicity (CVE) was suggested as a potential index of red blood cell (RBC) aggregation and measured from transverse section of the carotid artery through a commercialized ultrasound system (Voluson e, GE) with an M12L linear probe. Hough Transform was applied to identify the blood vessel lumen from the harmonic ultrasound images of the carotid artery to analyze the variation of echogenicity. The aggregation level is known to be increased after smoking. CVE before and after smoking, was measured from 15 smokers. CVE was increased for 13 smokers, decreased for 3 smokers, and has no change for 1 smoker, after they took one or two cigarettes. It suggests that smoking may increase the CVE, and CVE may be a potential parameter to study RBC aggregation in vivo.
