1. EGPWS is proving to be a practical useful tool for the pilot, improving situational awareness to terrain, providing timely alerts and warnings for inadvertent flight into precipitous terrain and for inadvertent flight into terrain or water short of the runway unattainable with GPWS. 2. While EGPWS is proving to be a good technological tool for the pilot in reducing CFIT risk, it is no substitute for training for the pilot and controller. Improving awareness of the risk, improving flight procedures, improving corporate/airline management attitude to the risk, and improving regulatory body's attitudes to the risk remain key improvement objectives. Technology is no panacea or replacement for common sense, basic airmanship training and a more complete solution to addressing the human elements of CFIT risk. 3. It seems likely that the risk of controlled fight terrain mishaps will be lowered by at least a magnitude for aircraft equipped with EGPWS compared to aircraft fitted with standard GPWS.
