This paper presents the results of a study, using six Brazilian and five Argentinean smectitic clays, on the effects of their beidellite contents and the proportions of the montmorillonite types (Wyoming or Cheto) intercalation and pillaring with polyhydroxy-aluminum cations. The desirable qualities of intercalation and subsequent pillaring were evaluated by the values of d(001) and the width at half-height of the (001) reflection. It was observed that the higher the beidellite content of the clay, the more difficult it was to obtain good quality intercalated and pillared smectites. No direct relationship was found between the montmorillonite type, Wyoming or Cheto, and the quality of Al intercalation and pillaring in the group of clays studied.
