The construction of the first stretch of the 18 berths of the Port of Rio de Janeiro, between 1904 and 1910, was done by the English firm C. H. Walker, using the same technology applied in the Port of Antwerp, in Belgium. This first stretch of the port, called Gamboa Quay, with 3,298 m long, had 18 mooring berths with respective ware houses. This construction played an important role for the city of Rio de Janeiro's renewal in the beginning of the century , serving as a decisive incentive not only for the city's development, but also for its whole hinterland. The increase of the regional economic activities, greatly originated by the port itself, gave way to the construction of new quay extensions, which were built successively afterwards: the Sao Cristovao Quay (1,428 m long, built between 1924/1930); the Caju Quay (1,300 m long, built between 1948/1949); the Maua Pier (83 m wide and 400 m long, on each side, built between 1949/1951, presently being utilized for urban expansion); and the Container Terminal (built originally between 1958/1959 and recently remodeled to receive containers, with quay length of 480 m, and container handling capacity of 160,000 TEUs/year).
