THE EXPERIENCE OF THE PORT OF LE HAVRE IN CATHODIC PROTECTION AND THE REPAIR OF METAL STRUCTURES

Part of the infrastructure work of the Port of Le Havre, notably the quays, the quayside protections and the dolphins are made of metal structure (sheet piles, tubes). This kind of structure has been mainly used from the years 1970's and was originally considered as provisional or short-life. As in many other ports, very few precautions have been taken to minimize the corrosion of these structures, contrary to bridges and lock gates for example. Twenty or thirty years after construction, most metal structures are still in operation for container berths, ro-ro trade and bulk terminals. Most structures have suffered significant corrosion which, in certain cases, amount or even goes beyond the safety measurements on metal thickness. The article describes the testing sessions carried out, the problems of accuracy of the measurements and the results of the measurements. The article states the standard reasons for corrosion in sea water or brackish water, and mentions, as one of the causes, the action of industrial waste and discharge into the port. For all new structures, the Port of Le Havre has implemented protections through paint coating and/or cathodic protection which is systematically carried out by sacrificial anodes.
