摘要

The rapid development in the technologies used within the field of maritime instrumentation has improved Vessel Traffic Systems (VTS) to the benefit of navigational safety and port efficiency. Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) has designed a current and wind monitoring system that represents an innovation within the field of VTS. The system was installed for the Danish State Railways' Shipping Company (Scandlines) outside Knudshoved ferry terminal in the Great Belt in February 1995. The reclaimed land for the abutments of the Western Bridge of the Great Belt Link has affected the circulation pattern of the area. This has had a negative impact on the navigation of ferries entering Knudshoved Harbour. A strong southbound current in the Great Belt results in strong gradients in the local current field just outside the harbour; occasionally a small eddy builds up with a resulting counter current close to the coast. On several occasions this has created hazardous situations for ferries. A serious incident occurred in September 1993 when the ferry M/F Roms0 collided with the Western Bridge, which highlighted the need for real time information on current and wind conditions. Scandlines asked DHI to investigate possible measures which could be taken to improve the safety of ferry navigation. Based on a detailed study of the circulation pattern of the area, DHI came up with a design for a current and wind monitoring system with on-line real-time information provided to all ferries calling at Knudshoved Harbour. This information assists the chief officers onboard the ferries to take proper precautions when calling at the harbour. The system comprises two sea bottom mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), a land based wind sensor, a UHF broadcast data transmission link and, for each installation, a data interface. The remote sensing technique of ADCPs is particularly well suited for harbour areas, where unimpeded navigation is a high priority. The system worked completely satisfactorily for 31/2 years until the closing down of the Scandlines ferry line between Halsskov and Knudshoved upon the opening of the Great Belt Link in June 1998.
