The Bepi Columbo mission to Mercury exposes thernsurfaces of the spacecraft to temperatures in excess ofrn450℃ in a high intensity UV radiation environmentrnequivalent to 10 solar constants. To meet theserndemanding requirements a ceramic based white coatingrnwas developed, Nanovation V14. However, due to thernneed to fire this coating at high temperature (~ 500℃),rnthis coating is not suitable for applying to componentsrnmade from an aluminium alloy. A need was identifiedrnfor a white coating to operate in this environment for thernaluminium housing on the thruster pointing assemblyrn(TPA) of the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM).rnThis paper describes the development and qualificationrnof a white ceramic coating based on Partially StabilisedrnZirconia (PSZ) applied to an aluminium substrate usingrna plasma spraying process. The temperature rise of thernaluminium substrate during the plasma spraying processrnis less than 150℃ and so the mechanical properties ofrnthe underlying aluminium alloy substrate are unaffected.rnThe coating was characterised in terms of thermornoptical performance and adhesion after exposure to arnhigh temperature and high UV radiation test, a bake test,rnthermal cycling and mechanical stressing. Alsornaddressed was the ESD performance of the coating. Thernresults showed that the plasma sprayed PSZ coating onrnan aluminium alloy substrate was suitable for use in thernextreme Bepi Columbo environment.
