A series of new segmented polyurethanes based on polycaprolactone diol with or without polyethylene oxide diol of 2000 average molecular weight, isophorone diisocyanate and 2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)pyridine was synthesized and characterized. By a quaternization reaction of the pyridine rings with benzyl bromide (about 85% quaternization degree), polyurethane cationomers of pyridinium type with an ionic moieties content under 1 meq g~(-1) polymer, were prepared. The antimicrobian activity of the pyridinium polymers against some bacteria such as E.Coli, S.Aureus and B.Subtilis was in vitro determined. A better antimicrobian response of the polycations containing long hydrophobic segments compared with those obtained by using polyethylene oxide sequences was evidenced.
