The Influence of Processing Parameters on the HA Products of RF Thermal Plasma-Sprayed HA/Ti Composite Coatings

The influences of plasma processing parameters on the characteristics of HA/Ti composite coatings, and particularly on their surface A-layers, were investigated. HA/Ti composite coatings were deposited on titanium substrates by a radio-frequency (rf) thermal plasma spraying method with rf input powers of 10-30 kW. XRD patterns showed that the topmost HA layer of the composite coatings had an apatite structure with (001) preferred orientation. The degree of this orientation was little affected by RF input power while it showed a tendency to increase with an increase in the substrate temperature during spraying. Some minute X-ray peaks ascribable to tetracalcium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate and calcium oxide were also observed. Their peak intensities were remarkably high when rf input power was 17 kW or more, while these only slightly affected by the substrate temperature during spraying. The crystallinities of the coatings sprayed at 12, 17 and 27 kW were 82, 68 and 70percent, respectively. The crystallinity of the coating also decreased when RF input power was 17 kW or over. On the other hand, the coating crystallinity was affected little by the substrate temperature during spraying.
