To study the influence of calcium phosphate ceramic composition on biological apatite formation, pellets made of hydroxyapatite (HA), beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) and two types of biphasic calcium phosphates (BCP) with HA/beta-TCP ratios of 25/75 and 75/25 were incubated in cell medium for 48 hours. Then pellets were removed from wells and surfaces were analyzed in Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an image analysis system and in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) equipped with Electron microprobe analysis (EDX). pH and calcium concentrations were also measured in incubation wells. Newly formed carbonated apatite crystals were observed at the surface of all the pellets. However: 1. the amount of precipitated crystals was twice lower for pure beta-TCP 2 the apatite formation occured faster for biphasis pellets (HA/beta-TCP mixtures) Knowing that the biological apatite layer is involved in cells adhesion, these results may explain partially in vivo performances of biphasis calcium phosphate ceramics as bone substitutes.
