The in vivo biological performance of a double layer HA/CaO-P_2O_5 glass and HA plasma sprayed coatings was assessed, using cylindrical implants that were placed in rabbits tibiae and histologically characterised after 2, 4, 8 and 16 weeks of implantation. For both types of coatings, long-term histological results indicated successful contact between implanted materials and bone, with organised new bone established at the interface. The main difference between the two coatings corresponded to the shorter implantation periods, where the composite coating induced faster osteointegration than HA coating. The faster formation of organised bone for composite coatings is discussed in terms of the presence of phase composition in the coatings structure.
