Apatite Coating in/on Rabbit Tendons Using an Alternate Soaking Process

The purpose of this study is to apply the new method called an alternate soaking process to coating clacium phosphate in or on rabbit tendons. Eight flexor degitorum ongus tendons were obtained from Japanese white rabbits. The tendons were soaked alternately in CaCl_2/Tris-HCl and Na_2HPO_4 solutions each for thirty minutes, half the specimens for two cycles, and half for seven cycles. Inorganic materials in the two and seven-cycle specimens were significantly greater than those of the uncoated tendons. Scanning electron microscopy photographs and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy images after the seven cycle treatments showed that calcium phosphate granules were deposited both on the surface area and in the mid portion of the tendons. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the coated calcium phosphate was calcium-deficient type hydroxyapatite.
