Rule 180 has now been in effect for more than 2 years, but many still do not understand its place in transport packaging nor how to use it to their advantage. Briefly, it is one of the packaging related rules contained in the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), the governing document for the less-than-truckload (LTL) common carrier mode of transportation. Since these packaging rules have existed for a long time as the only legal requirement for most transpport packagin and almost all shippers utilize LTL to some extent the rules have become the standard minimum specification in transport packaging for many shippers.
