Four lidar missions studied or implemented within the frame of the ESA's Earth Observation have been briefly presented. They represent major step toward a new area of measurement technique which complements the area of passive optical instrument and active radar instrument. The consideration of follow-on missions of ADM-Aeolus and of ATLID within the post-EPS programme shows the interest and benefits provide by lidars missions.
