High resolution images can be synthesized by combining the fields from separated sub-apertures. However, coherently combining spatially separated sub-aperture fields requires the formidable task of phasing the fields to interferometric tolerances. If complex fields could be accurately estimated (e.g. by a phase retrieval algorithm) or accurately measured (e.g. by a heterodyne detection scheme) then a high resolution image could be synthesized post-detection. The spatially separated fields be synthesized into a single higher resolution image via discrete Fourier transform. This synthesis requires knowledge of the phase relationships between sub-apertures, so we expect that the target will be coherently illuminated.
