In this paper we have presented a summary of some of the efforts put into the technological developments of the main critical units needed for the lidar instruments planed to be flown on the coming Earth Observation missions of the ESA. Three Earth Explorer missions at different phases of implementation have directly benefited from the outcome of these risk mitigation activities.
