LNG is entering a period of dramatic change around the world—in particular, Japan witnessed greatest changes. Until early 1990s, along with its economic growth and environmental concern, Japanese LNG buyers constantly increased its LNG purchase every year, which assisted the development of the LNG industry to date. However, challenged with economic recession and uncertainty caused by deregulation, such growth slowed down. rnIn order to expand Japanese LNG market further and start-up new LNG projects based on such matured but credible market, we suggest that LNG sellers and buyers should explore new relationship throughout the LNG chain vertically and horizontally, such as joint shipping, joint trading, LNG sellers’ downstream participation and LNG buyers’ upstream participation. For example, upstream participation of LNG buyers, who have strong downstream marketing force and know each customer’s need in detail, enables “strategic LNG purchase”, through which LNG projects can capture end-user’s demand difficult to obtain with the conventional terms and conditions
