The global LNG industry will grow rapidly in the future provided large capital investments are made for the development of markets and for the concomitant supply. Opportunities exist to grow the use of LNG in both mature gas markets, replacing depleting indigenous resources and complementing pipeline imports, and also in emerging gas markets. In general there are strong incentives for LNG producers to participate down the value chain to grow demand and secure outlets. There are, however, risks for market developers varying according to the market type that tend to be greatest in the emerging gas markets with the requirement to build major infrastructure with regulatory regimes in transition. Key factors for success in market development include stakeholder management, technical expertise and access to finance, as well as a competitive supply position. rnThe outlook for a widening gap between gas demand and supply in the USA is fuelling great interest in LNG import and it is likely to become a major LNG consumer during the next decade. This will be a significant globalising factor for the LNG industry and will provide an important choice for suppliers and potentially, through competition for finance, tighten markets and prices.
