There are several tools available for measuring soil properties including the conernpenetrometer and the bevameter. Legend relates the cone penetrometer to the British Officersrnwalking stick used in WW I. The Bevameter (Derived from Bekker Value Meter) was inventedrnas a result of Bekker's work in the areas of land locomotion and has its origins in classical civilrnengineering bearing capacity and soil shear tests. Original Bevameters were portable andrnoperated by hand. A “steam gauge” was used to measure penetration force and sinkage withrndead weight and a torque wrench used to measure shear stress. Later models utilized electricallyrncontrolled hydraulics to perform the compaction and shear operations but much of the operationrnwas still done manually. Data was recorded with a X-Y or a strip chart recorder and reduced byrnhand. With the technology available today, the bevameter can be totally automated using stateof-rnthe-art instrumentation and portable computers for control and data storage/reduction.rnThe Keweenaw Research Center and the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive command have workedrntogether to design, develop and build a completely automated bevameter in support of TACOM'srnwork in the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) research and development effort. Using computerrncontrol systems to operate the electro-hydraulic units, the automated bevameter automaticallyrncollects data. The computer program uses commercial software to calculate the Bekker values.rnThe unit is designed for measuring soil properties for the lightweight UGV's and therefore isrndesigned to be mounted and used off of a truck or trailer. This paper discusses the design aspectsrnand benefits of the automated bevameter.
