This study aims to clarify the failure mechanism during three dimensionalrnexacavation.rnIt is possible to evaluate the excavation mechanism for a two dimensional excavation. However,rnwhen dealing with three dimensional excavation, considerable uncertainty exists in therntheoretical evaluation. The main cause of such uncertainty is due to a lack of information onrnmaterials and mechanisms in front of the cutting bit.rnIn this study model excavation tests using a flat simple cutting bit were performed on two typesrnof sandy soils; lunar soil (Regolith) simulant and Toyoura standard sand. The failurernprogression patterns in these tests were visualized using a X-ray TV imaging technique. As arnresult, we could demonstrate that the failure pattern was affected by the type of soil and thernrake angle of the cutting bit.
