Suspensions are becoming more commonly available on agricultural tractors butrnthere is little published information on their effect on traction. The paper reviews the initialrnresults of experiments carried out with the aim of investigating the effect of wheel vibration onrntraction using a 495/70 R24 XM47 radial tyre and a coil spring and damper suspension as usedrnon high mobility agricultural tractors. Some new results and modelling are presented. Tractionrnand vibration data were collected using a single wheel tester operating on a compacted sandyrnloam soil in a ground level soil tank with a sine wave cut into the surface. Resulting vibrationrnoutput and drawbar pull were measured with the suspension active and locked out of use. Arntrack vibration input amplitude of ± 5 mm to ±7 mm, a wavelength of 0.76 m and tyre pressuresrnof 1 bar, 1.5 bar and 2 bar were used. The range of forward speeds included input vibration atrnthe tyre’s natural frequency. Wheel static loads of 2060 kg and 1065 kg were compared with therncontrol load of 1560 kg. The tyre characteristics of dynamic radial stiffness, damping, andrnvibration amplitude transmissibility were determined.rnFor the sandy loam soil and tyre used, the main conclusions were: The greatest variation ofrndrawbar pull was found at the tyre’s natural frequency and at the higher tyre pressure of 2 barrnwith the suspension locked out of use. Increasing the wheel load to 2060 kg had a large effect inrnreducing the draw bar pull variation. Reducing the tyre pressure to 1 bar had a greater effect inrnreducing the draw bar pull variation. Reducing tyre pressure increased tyre damping andrnincreasing the tyre load also increased tyre damping. The suspension had a large effect inrnreducing the variation in drawbar pull at the higher tyre pressure of 2 bar but had little effect at arntyre pressure of 1 bar. As the input frequency reduced towards the natural frequency of thernspring and sprung mass the draw bar pull variation can increase to be comparable with orrngreater than with the suspension locked out of use. The drawbar pull variation with thernsuspension active was found to be very similar over the input frequency range for all therncombinations of tyre pressure and load used. Models based on predicting the tyre dynamic loadrnfit the general form of the data collected but the experimental error requires more analysis andrnevaluation.
