Visualization of the deformation behavior of the sand around the cone penetrometerrnwas conducted using an X-ray TV imaging technique in order to establish a clear understandingrnof the CPT mechanism from an experimental standpoint.rnA total of six model penetration tests were performed changing the tip form, overburdenrnpressure and relative density in each case. The model ground was prepared in a chamber tornobserve the soil movement placing lead shot targets at regular intervals on the vertical plane ofrnthe penetrometer tip.rnTypical results include displacement vector diagram of the targets, distribution of normal strain errnand ez, and distribution of shear strain grz which were obtained by reading the coordinates of therntarget on the X-ray image in each case.rnIt became clear that the deformation characteristics of the penetrometer in sand arernsignificantly dependent upon the sand state (packing), while it is hardly affected by the tip formrnof the cone.
