The role of LNG in global gas supplies is becoming increasingly significant. If the demand for gas continues to grow at historic levels of 2-3% annual increase, LNG will need to grow by more than 7% per annum until 2015 as domestic gas fields decline. It is apparent that as LNG demand increases and the pattern of suppliers and markets diversifies, LNG will increasingly be traded more flexibly.rnThere are a number of practical factors that have to be addressed in order to facilitate LNG trading. This paper will explore some of them, and will then discuss their implications for the emergence of a "spot" (short-term) market. These factors are both technical and commercial, and will include topics such as:rn1. Gas Interchangeabilityrn2. gas quality adjustment to match different market specificationsrn3. master sale and purchase agreements and contract flexibility.rn4. shipping issues (short-term chartering, protocols, documentation)rn5. gas and LNG sampling, analysis and metering issuesrn6. gas boil-off rates and their impact on cargo quality and valuern7. managing inventories of varying density to avoid rollover in tanks.
