Benchmarking has become well established in the oil and gas process industry as a business improvement tool. Such benchmarking has not yet penetrated the shipping industry to anything like the same degree, but the same pressures which have lead to its wide adoption elsewhere are present in the shipping industry, not least in the LNG shipping business.rnTo respond to this need, Shell Shipping Technology, with its extensive knowledge of LNG ship operational management, joined with the consultancy arm of Shell Global Solutions, with its track record in benchmarking in the process industry to run a pilot scheme with selected LNG ship owning groups.rnOperational performance areas that were compared were health & safety, operating costs, ship availability & utilisation, port performance, cargo management (including boil-off rates and heel management), personnel and environmental impacts.rnMajor issues are addressed, such as how to ensure confidentiality of input data whilst still providing useful information to the participants, and the normalisation methods to ensure that, as far as possible, the comparisons are on a like for like basis.rnThis paper describes the processes used in establishing the pilot scheme, discusses the key learning points, some of the value already obtained even at this pilot stage and looks at the way forward.
