The use of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), x-ray fluorescence (XRF), massspectrometry (MS and GC/MS) and thermogravimetry (TGA) for the detection andmonitoring of additives in elastomeric electrical insulation (EPDM rubber)is described. It is demonstrated that the heterogeneity of polymericcompounds and distribution of antioxidant and mineral charges dispersed inhigh-voltage cable insulation processed by extrusion can be analysedsuccessfully. The results showed composition fluctuations of the rubberamong samples taken from different points of the dielectric, some relativevariations were: kaolin 5.7% (using XRF and TGA), lead oxide 8.7% (PAS,XRF), zinc oxide 13.8% (PAS, XRF), antioxidant 20% (PAS) and paraffin islost from 20% to 40% of weight (MS, GC/MS). These variations were assignedto:i. point-to-point changes in the composition of the dielectric compound;ii. point-to-point changes in the thermophysical properties of thecompounds.The fluctuations in composition and thermal properties of the compoundcaused dielectric constant fluctuations from point-to-point. As aconsequence, some insulation points are subject to higher electric stressesthan other points, and are more susceptible to dielectric breakdown.
