A new NDT-technique for quality control of layered structures which is based on theinteraction of laser light and ultrasound has been developed at the Department ofMetallurgy and Materials Engineering in collaboration with the InterdisciplinaryResearch Center (KULAK) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. This new techniquewhich interrogates the material in a critical angle of ultrasound measures the phaseof the ultrasound reflected on the material. This paper will focus on the latestdevelopment of this technique and presents a sensor which combines the laser lightand ultrasound within one device that can be mounted on any classical scanningdevice. Since this technique scans the material in the critical angle of ultrasound aprocedure has been developed as well to scan for this angle automatically. Thosedevelopments make the acousto-optic technique more robust, much more simple andefficient. The results using this new sensor will be presented and compared withformer results obtained in a set-up where laser light and ultrasound were separatelymounted on an optical bench for stability purposes.
