The situation of computed neutron tomography (NT) is described from thepoint of view of the COST action 524 members (DE, IT, FR, UK, SL, CH, HU,SP, RU, CZ, AT). This European collaboration is dealing with "Neutronradiography techniques for the detection of defects in materials" andestablished a Working Group "Neutron Tomography and Computation Analysis" in1998.Neutron tomography set-ups for the inspection of macroscopic samples havebeen built in several countries with different performances concerning theneutron beam properties, the specific detection devices and methods used forimage reconstruction. This article explains the principles of tomography with neutrons, makes acomparison of the individual solutions in the member countries and gives animpression about presently obtained results of selected examples.Prospects regarding higher spatial resolution and faster operation cycles(image generation, reconstruction and visualisation) are presented.
