National interest in the environmental impact of wastewater has focused continuingrnattention on the development of efficient and cost effective technologies for removing pollutantsrnfrom industrial waste streams. A newly designed multi-stage loop-flow flotation (MSTLFLO?)rnprocess has shown its efficacy in treating water containing emulsified oil and fine particles. Inrnaddition, the MSTLFLO process is capable of removing dissolved chemicals by adsorptivernflotation using suspended solid absorbent.rnThis paper presents an experimental investigation on a simulated wastewater systemrncontaining emulsified mineral oil, suspended particles (powdered activated carbon or glassrnbeads), and dissolved phenol (as a representative chemical). Test results show that the separationrnefficiencies of emulsified oil and fine particles are greater than 90% while the phenol removalrnapproaches the limiting value of equilibrium adsorption. Thus, the potential application ofrnMSTLFLO process for simultaneous removal of mixed pollutants from industrial wastewater isrnclearly demonstrated.
