The ease with which data may be entered into, and extracted from, electronic databases usingrnInternet based applications is providing new opportunities for understanding and modellingrnof complex systems. An expert system for solid-liquid separation equipment selection andrnelimination, using an Internet based interface coupled to appropriate databases, is described.rnOne database contains filtration constants for materials and an illustration of how thesernconstants may be used in equipment selection as well as mathematical simulations ofrnfiltration processes is provided. The database of filtration constants is easily expanded usingrnexperimental data, or analysis of plant operating data. An experimental technique thatrnmeasured the in-situ concentration of the forming filter cake, via electrical conductivityrnmeasurements, was used to compare the simulated local cake concentrations, using therndatabase filtration constants, against the measured ones. The agreement between thernsimulated cake concentrations and the measured ones was excellent. Simulation of the cakernformation period, of compressible compacts, shows that the cake properties at the cloth-cakerninterface can be reliably investigated and may provide an insight into appropriate cakerndischarge conditions.
