The lanthanum-Diatomaceous Earth (DE) adsorbent material has a demonstratedrnpotential for the removal and filtration of arsenic from drinking water. The process utilizes rapidrnadsorption of arsenic species onto nano-crystalline adsorbents coated onto the naturallyrnoccurring diatomaceous earth (DE) mineral. Laboratory scale as well as pilot-scale tests havernshown that the adsorption and filtration process is capable of reducing the arsenic level below 10rnppb. A pilot scale test conducted at a rate of 10-16 gallons per minute has shown that thernestimated cost to treat groundwater containing 60-100 ppb arsenic to meet the drinking waterrnstandard of 10 ppb is in the range of 40-50 cents per thousand gallons of water treated. Therncomposite adsorbent is capable of removing both arsenite and arsenate. The adsorbed arsenic isrnincorporated into the crystalline matrix of the adsorbent.
