Cummins and other diesel engine manufacturers have long recognized the relationship betweenrnlube oil life and engine duty cycle. As duty cycles become increasingly severe, the oil's additivernpackage degrades and, if left unchecked, semisolid sludge-like materials and soot can accumulaternuntil engine performance is affected. For this reason, engine duty cycle, along with the qualityrnof the oil, are the primary basis for determining lube and oil filter service intervals for dieselrnengines. Much work has focused on lubricant additive degradation. This study makes an effortrnto better understand how abrasive particle contamination is related to duty cycle. Particlerncounting was used in this study to monitor changes in particle size and concentration. This paperrnfocuses on the particle counting/modeling methodology used to estimate contaminationrngeneration rates. In a future paper, the will be discussed and are expected to provide insight intornthe relationship between engine duty cycle and need for filtration to control engine wear.
