A material balance model has been developed to evaluate solvent extraction as a method for cesium removal from a radioactive waste stream. The model, written using the SpeedUp software, allows the user to quickly modify operating parameters, run operating scenarios and evaluate many case studies. The basic solvent extraction model has been coupled with SpeedUp models of pre-processing and post-processing operations to provide a complete model of the entire waste treatment system. The model has been applied to investigate the feasibility of a proposed caustic solvent extraction process for cesium removal. Results from the SpeedUp solvent extraction model have been validated against literature values.
