摘要

The strengthening of reinforced and prestressed bridges to accommodate new loading conditions and problems arising from design or construction defects is not a new concept to engineers. However, utilizing high strength, lightweight and corrosion resistant carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in place of traditionally bulky, heavy and corrosion prone steel is new to most engineers. To date a significant focus has been placed on the use of CFRP composites in terms of column wrapping for seismic retro-fit and therefore engineers are less familiar with the capabilities of CFRP laminates and bars. The intent of this paper is to provide the engineer an overview of how CFRP laminates and bars can be externally bonded, embedded near the surface or prestressed to improve bridge capacity and serviceability.
