In 1992, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a large experimental and analytical research program to study curved steel bridge behavior. The program centered on testing a series of full-scale plate girder specimens under realistic loads and boundary conditions. These conditions were achieved by placing the specimens in a full-scale experimental curved bridge structure that behaved as a reaction frame. A number of elastic tests of this structure were performed during construction and results were examined and compared to analytical models. The tests and comparisons were used to verify instrument placement locations, establish data reduction schemes and validate analytical models. They also provided an opportunity to study the influences of fabrication and construction on curved bridge behavior. The construction tests that were completed are summarized and representative results from the analytical comparisons are presented and discussed.
