Conventional ways of conducting rural enterprises are stress proned with implications of health hazards. The exposure of person to these stresses may affect him in one or more of three ways-health, performance and comfort. Musculoskeletal disorders are major problem in many industrial populations. The causative factors of musculoskeletal disorders are poor ergonomic design of work place and the task including work organization, poor working posture, repetitive work, static work, frequent loading etc (Parimalam et al.,2005). The environment stresses namely noise, illumination, heat, vibration etc play a vital role in the proper functioning of working environment. In a developing country like India proper attention is not paid to the working environment, particularly in small to medium scale manufacturing units. The extent by which environmental heat may negatively affect work performance is, in part influenced by the nature of work performed (Lind, 1973). The present study aims at studying the work environment of rural enterprise and its effect on health. The study was conducted in selected villages of Dharwad taluka of Karnataka state and consists of five existed chilli pounding rural enterprise, metabolic discomfort, work related body disorders and details of work station was collected through interview with the help of schedule. The level of satisfaction of metabolic discomfort is measured on five points rating scale (very comfortable-5 to very discomfortable-1). The level of work related body disorders was analyzed by giving scores and scoring is based on symptoms, body tolerance, frequency and impact of symptoms on work. Maximum metabolic discomfort was reported by the respondents involved in chilli pounding and weaving enterprises. This is because of environmental stress factors like noise and dust and repeated movements of arms which scored 14.80 and 15.00 points respectively. Women experienced maximum pain in hands and men experienced more pain in knees. Non availability of other jobs and not having cultivable land were the reasons mentioned for majority (80%) of the respondents for taking chilli pounding as an enterprise. Respondents encountered the major problems like heavy work, insufficient light, less chance for improvement, financial problems and lack of knowledge while performing the activities in chilli pounding unit. Hence there is a need for improving work environment of rural enterprise to avoid the health hazards and ultimately increase the working capacity, performance, productivity and also helps in improving the ergonomic gain.
