The Ridek, formed from the union of a motorized deck (the Modek) and a cab that rides upon it (thernRidon), does not belong to any existing class of vehicle. It redefines the problem of the urban zeroemissionrnvehicle and bridges the gap between public and private transportation. It has the potential torntransform transportation, and the city that hosts it.rnHaving many forms compatible with the same Modek, the Ridon may serve as a private car, commercialrnvan, light truck or small bus. The privately owned Ridon feels as personal and private as anyrnautomobile, although carried by a rented and quickly changed Modek. The propulsion system withinrnthe Modek is immaterial to the passengers in the Ridon: zero-emission urban Modeks operate withinrnthe city, fuel burning inter-urban Modeks between cities. Thus, the Ridek captures the desirable featuresrnof the hybrid but, by separating them according to location and use, provides a true zeroemissionrnvehicle for the urban environment. Outside the city, the Ridek’s range equals that of thernhybrid, or of a fuel-burning vehicle.rnThe Ridon owner contracts with a Modek Exchange Service to receive a fully serviced Modek.rnMonthly payments include a basic fee for the Modek and various charges related to distance traveled,rnrush-hour use of special lanes, parking and toll charges, etc. The 80-km range of the zero-emissionrn(battery) Modek suffices for most daily use. The battery can be re-charged at home, at work, or at onernof the local charging-parking locations. Should the range prove insufficient, replacement of thernModek for a fresh one at a Modek Exchange Station is as simple as refueling an automobile—perhapsrnsimpler because the driver remains in the Ridek and the fee, if any, appears in the monthly statement.rnModeks offer wide scope for traffic management when operated under city government. They mayrnbe fabricated locally, and incorporate various sensors and traffic control elements making law enforcementrneasier and safer, and driver re-education feasible. Commuter lanes, preferential parking,rnand other privileges, would be the expected rewards for those who do not contribute to urban pollution;rnothers may be reduced initial investment and operating costs.
