Educating the technician workforce is a critical element to introduction of new technology. Airlines arernconverting ground support equipment from diesel to electricity. It appears two philosophies of trainingrnimplementation exist. First, convenience training: placing electric tugs in service and conducting trainingrnas the convenience of time and money exist. Second, just-in-time: train technicians when the electricsrnarrive to perform preventive maintenance and avoidance of common transition problems.rnThe Electric Vehicle Center of Technology (EVCT) has trained multiple airlines with these differentrnphilosophies. Unattended philosophical and technical problems tend to fester and lead to system failure.rnComparative analysis of the two widely differing philosophies shows that when “just-in-time” training isrnconducted, the new paradigms established are prone to be more positive. Attending EVCT training at thernapproximate time of equipment arrival produces preventive maintenance schedules and avoidance ofrnbasic EV technical problems.rnAn emerging electric vehicle issue is the training of emergency responders. EVCT has found thatrnemergency responder training is a strategic initiative that must be addressed. A recent survey of airlinernpilots indicates a growing concern of potential accidents prior to takeoff due to the increase of groundrntraffic.rnLessons learned from this study are appropriate not only for the airline industry, but also for commonrnfleet purchases. The airlines are on the forefront of the EV niche market, therefore, training issues andrnresults may be predictors to other niche markets.
