A design tool for HEV power train was developed. The tool has three modules, design, powertrainrnsimulation, and vehicle simulation. The design module is used to determine the target vehiclerndesign specifications, such as component sizes, gear ratios, weight, etc. The design module wasrndeveloped based on the component dynamics, design rules and constraints. Depending on thernconstraints, such as minimizing the size of the powertrain or minimizing the power loss of thernelectric machines, the design module will optimize the design. The resulting design specificationsrnwill be stored in a PDM and passed to the simulation modules. The powertrain simulation modulernis used to evaluate the design using various duty cycles. The module estimates the capability of therndesigned powertrain by taking various potential routes and terrain conditions. The vehiclernsimulation module is used to evaluate the performance of a target vehicle. With the given vehiclernspecifications, the module evaluates the vehicle performance using the designed powertrain underrnvarious control strategies. The vehicle's fuel consumption, state of charge of the battery, chargingrnand discharging behavior of the battery packs, and torque and speed of individual component, canrnbe obtained form the simulation. The software tool is interfaced with the PDM system (I-MAN,rnUnigraphics) so that various parts can be chosen in the design. The PDM is a database that is usedrnto store information about parts and components, such as engine, motor, etc. The proposed systemrncan be used for both series hybrid and parallel hybrid systems.
