The present paper analyses the possibilities of using electrolyte resistivity measurements as a tool forrnreal time determination of the state of charge in lead-acid batteries. Electrochemical Impedancernmeasurements performed directly on battery electrodes as well as on specially designedrnelectrochemical sensors allow concluding that a frequency in the 100Hz to 10kHz range is suitable forrnproper cell resistance measurements. In this frequency range the battery impedance approaches a purernresistive behaviour (electrolyte resistance) free of effects due to wiring inductances and interfacial andrnredox capacitances. In batteries the right measuring frequency (the one giving impedance phase anglernclosest to zero) depends on the state of charge as well because of changes in the electrode surfacernresistance.
