Hybrid Vehicles, which have been studied for a while, have recently reached the market with thernPrius, the Tino and the Insight. The hybrid concept has been developed on LDVs with the followingrngoals :rn1. Improve i.c. engine working conditions and then decrease consumption and emission,rn2. Prepare the shift toward high power (and voltage) on board accessory network,rn3. Enable the vehicle to be used in full electric mode, with no local emission,rn4. Enable to shift vehicle energy consumption from petroleum to another primary sources usingrnelectricity vector.rnHowever, characteristics of the first vehicles on the market highlight the fact that the only two firstrnpoints have been considered in these precursors incorporating very small high power batteries, used inrncharge sustaining mode. The paper will analyze the main factors influencing this choice, i.e. :rn1. Driveline and battery characteristics for ZEV range,rn2. Type of use of the vehicle (very dense cities center in EEC or widespread cities in US),rn3. Existence of inner cities centers restricted to non pollutant vehicles,rn4. Type of electricity mix of production,rn5. The necessity to decrease CO2 emission.rnThe influence of the charge depleting mode together with energy consumption shift from petroleum tornelectricity will be evaluated for different country and different terms.
