Deep oxidative desulfurization of fuels catalyzed by phosphotungstic acid in ionic liquids

1.Introduction Ionic liquids (ILs), as a novel green solvent[1], have been used as extractants for liquid/liquid extraction, in which sulfur compounds can be removed from fuels. However, the sulfur removals are not favorable because of the similar polarity between alkens, aromatics and the sulfur compounds [2]. Here we employed a simplified, industrially available and highly effective acid catalyst for the oxidation of aromatic sulfur compounds. A extraction and catalytic oxidation desulfurization (ECODS) system composed of H3PW12O40(HPW), 30% H2O2 and [bmim]BF4 was used for the removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from the model oil at room temperature. The removal of DBT could reach 98.2% at room temperature (30 ℃) for 1 h, which was remarkably superior to mere solvent extraction with IL (14.2%) or catalytic oxidation without IL (15.9%).
