The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has been conductingresearch and development of “Smartways,” which allow various information to be exchangedbetween vehicles, drivers, pedestrians, and other users. Based on past R&D, ITS Spots(DSRC antennas) have been installed at more than 1,600 locations nationwide by the end ofMarch 2011 and ITS Spot services will commence throughout Japan. This paper outlines theMLIT’s R&D on Smartways, shows some examples of ITS Spot services deployed asroad-vehicle cooperative systems in large scale, and reports on ongoing R&D on interactiveinformation services.
