Users expect fieldbus technology to provide benefits that help meet external and internal busienss needs. They expect improved process control and increased information about the state of the process and the automation equipment controlling the process. Users anticipate that these benefits will occur in every phase of the automation life cycle: design and engineering, installation and commissioning, operation and maintenance. This paper outlines key user issues with fieldbus. It then describes the key elements of fieldbus technology and how this technology leads to satisfaction of user expectations.
