Three or four years ago the demand for recyclable or repulpable packaging was intense. The roll packaging industry tried to meet this demand in a number of ways. Locations were set up to have the packaging returned. Systems were designed to get the packaging to recycled cylinderboard manufacturers for use in their operations, and other assorted methods. Some more successful than others. However, one important fact remained. The material used to add moisture protection to the roll wrap and headers was a contaminant to the pulping systems utilizing OCC as a fiber source. This is no longer the case. The newest generation of kraft based roll packaging has superior moisture barrier properties, water and grease holdout, and yet meets repulpability standards that allow it to be recycled in operations utilizing OCC as a fiber source.
