Fibre optic communication networks are becoming an established technology in modern military avionic systems. As confidence and experience is gained, the use of optical technologies will become more extensive to cover communications within as well as between equipment enclosures.rnThere is increasingly a presumption that avionic systems will follow commercial developments and introduce single-mode optical systems. However, the promise of virtually unlimited bandwidth is offset by the significant risks that must be overcome and the technologies to be matured.rnThis paper offers a view from the perspective of a system integrator that Graded Index Fibre optics will meet the requirements for the communications network within future Integrated Modular Avionic systems and that single mode technology will introduce many significant and unnecessary risks.
